Shauna has a passion for guiding clients through often difficult situations with empathy and compassion whilst delivering client focused results.
Shauna has practiced in Invercargill since she was admitted to the bar in 2009 and joined the AWS legal team in 2017. Shauna has a varied background having spent the first two years of her practice doing property / commercial work and conveyancing before focusing her practice more on family and civil litigation in the latter years of her practice. Shauna maintains an interest in property law and considers that her understanding of property law and commercial transactions puts her ahead of the rest especially when undertaking relationship property work for clients.
“Having a firm understanding of peoples structures and their financial positions is absolutely vital in the ever changing landscape of relationship property work. These days people have their affairs tied up in sometimes complex structures and it is necessary for us to know and understand those structures to protect them when they are in relationships and advise them when relationships break down.”
Whilst Shauna’s focus area is relationship property she has extensive experience in cases involving care arrangements and disputes for children, estate disputes, and obtaining orders when people lack capacity to make their own decisions. Shauna also regularly advises clients in regards to their estate planning including Will’s, Trusts, and Enduring Powers of Attorney.
Shauna is an experienced advocate with no fear of taking matters through the Court system when necessary, however her particular strength is in achieving negotiated outcomes.
“There are always those cases that will never settle out of a Court room, they need to be determined by a Judge. In all other cases negotiated outcomes best serve all parties as the parties then hold the power to determine the outcome of their own cases”
Shauna has conducted defended hearings in the District and Family Courts, regularly appeared for a variety of matters in the High Court and has extensive experience in Judicial Settlement Conferences and mediations.
Shauna spends her spare time with her two little boys and her family and being a born an bred southlander loves getting out and about in the Southland environment.
