Celebrating Byron Brown’s admission to the bar

On Tuesday, 29 July 2025, we proudly celebrated the admission of our newest solicitor, Byron Brown, to the bar at the Invercargill High Court. The ceremony was presided over by Justice Dunningham and marked a significant milestone in Byron’s legal journey.

Byron was joined by his proud parents, Byron and Rachel, his brother Quin, and a strong contingent of AWS Legal colleagues who came to support him on this special occasion.

Byron began his career with AWS Legal as a graduate Law Clerk in January 2025, following the completion of his LLB at the University of Canterbury. His passion for law was sparked by a family legacy in the profession and a deep interest in English. Originally from the United States, Byron and his family relocated to Invercargill in 2011 for what was meant to be a temporary role at Southland Hospital. Fourteen years later, Byron reflects on how that move shaped his future in ways he never imagined.

“Studying and working in the legal sector has been both fulfilling and intellectually stimulating,” Byron shared. “AWS Legal has given me an incredible start to my career. I’ve made great friends, received guidance from supportive mentors, and gained exposure to a wide range of legal matters that many junior lawyers don’t typically encounter.”

Byron is deeply grateful to be working in Invercargill and values the opportunity to give back to a community that has given so much to him and his family.

Reflecting on his admission, Byron said, “It was the culmination of years of study and marked a major milestone in my life. Though I was nervous, I felt honoured to speak and sign my name on the roll.”

Chris Peddie, Commercial Partner and Moving Counsel, added: “Byron is a keen young solicitor who brings a smile to everyone he works with. We truly appreciate his eagerness.”

Congratulations, Byron! We’re thrilled to have you on the AWS Legal team and look forward to watching your career flourish
